|James Sedgwick, Three Ships 10-Year-Old Single Malt Whisky (South Africa) |
When it comes to drink produced in South African we tend to think of brandy and wine, rather than single malt whisky. However, the country actually boasts two distilleries producing whisky, one in Pretoria and the other in the Western Cape. The latter operates as the James Sedgwick distillery, and is located at Wellington. It is owed by the Distell Group Ltd, and dates back to 1886, though whisky has only been produced since 1990. The distillery has recently been expanded and makes both grain and malt spirit, with its flagship product being the 10-year-old Three Ships single malt.
The nose is floral, with just a hint of brine, plus barley, fresh pears and hessian. The palate is rounded and malty, well-balanced, with ripe peaches, honey and soft spices. The finish is medium in length, with aniseed and spice. 43.0% ABV, 70cl, £42.00, specialist whisky merchants.
